Description

Northern Dancer, with Racing Hall of Fame trainer Horatio Luro, at Keeneland in April 1964.

Northern Dancer swept the 1964 Flamingo Stakes, Florida Derby, and Blue Grass Stakes en route to the Kentucky Derby. He won the 1964 Derby by a neck under Bill Hartack, setting a record time of 2:00 on a fast track that stood until Secretariat’s record-breaking win in 1973.

The once unassuming Windfield Farms yearling won seven of his nine starts as a two-year-old, and he met his three-year-old prep series nearly flawlessly before being sent off as the favorite in the 1964 Blue Grass Stakes. Piloted by Bill Hartack, Norther Dancer bested Allen Adair by 1/2 length.
