This photographic portrait features jockey Jack Gordon Westrope.
Born in Montana, Westrope was the son of racehorse owner and trainer W .T. Westrope. He was still an apprentice jockey when he collected 301 wins in 1933 at the age of 15. Westrope was the country’s leading rider that year, surpassing the 300-win mark for the first time since Vincent Powers rode 324 winners in 1908.
Westrope claimed 2,467 wins during his career. He was inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 2002.
