Description
Conformation shot of the American Thoroughbred Ponder with groom. Ponder, his sire (Pensive), and his son (Needles) were all Kentucky Derby winners.
Ponder was foaled at Calumet Farm in 1946 and trained by Hall of Famer Ben Jones. He ran with his year older stable mates Coaltown and Citation, although he was a year younger than both.
Ponder had an unremarkable two-year-old record, but he rose to prominence with his Lawrence Realization Stakes, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Arlington Classic, and American Derby victories in 1949. He won the 1949 Kentucky Derby and came in second in the Belmont Stakes.
Ponder bested Citation in the San Antonio Handicap in 1950, and he retired with a career record of 14-7-4 from 41 starts, with earnings of $541,275.
