This photograph features Thoroughbred owners Harry Payne "H.P." Whitney (left) and James Robert Keene (right) in conversation.

Harry Payne Whitney, American businessman, avid sportsman, and prominent Thoroughbred owner, was the leading U.S. owner eight times in the early 20th century. The nearly 200 stakes winners from Whitney Stables include Regret, Whiskery, Buskin, Broomspun, Bostonian, Victorian, and Burgomaster.

James R. Keene’s family emigrated to the United States from England in 1852. Having made his first fortune in West Coast mining companies, Keene was president of the San Francisco Stock Exchange before moving to New York and emerging as a major player in the New York financial and racing scenes. Keene’s Castleton Farm near Lexington, Kentucky, was a leading American breeding operation of the early 20th century.
