This photograph features the three jockeys (from left to right) Sam Doggett, Willie Simms, and Fred Taral pictured in 1894 at Morris Park Racecourse in the Bronx, New York.
Doggett was one of the country’s top riders in the mid-1890s, and Simms and Taral are both U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductees. Simms remains the only African-American to have won the Preakness Stakes (aboard Sly Fox in 1898). Taral rode Domino to 18 of his 19 wins between 1893 and 1895.
