Rigan McKinney at Saratoga

Photography of horse sports

This photograph features Rigan McKinney, steeplechase jockey, walking at Saratoga in a suit and hat. McKinney, inducted in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1968, is holding a race program. Trees and other people are visible in the background.

McKinney was raised among Thoroughbred owners, breeders, and riders. He rode primarily during the Great Depression years with much success, boasting winning percentages as high as 55% (1936) and 59% (1938). McKinney claimed his first American Grand National victory in 1931 atop Green Cheese, setting a record that would hold nearly 25 years.
