Twenty Grand at Belmont Park

Twenty Grand at Belmont Park

This photograph depicts Twenty Grand on the way to the winner's circle at Belmont Park in 1931. He is being led by owner Helen Julia Hay Whitney. The jockey up is Charles E. Kurtsinger, also known as "Charley" and "The Flying Dutchman." A crowd of cheering spectators flanks the pathway.

Kurtsinger and Twenty Grand won both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes in 1931, narrowly missing a Triple Crown victory as they came in second in the Preakness Stakes. Kurtsinger would later win a Triple Crown in 1937 aboard War Admiral.
