El Corazon del Backstretch (The Heart of the Backstretch)

Behind the roar of the grandstand and before the gates ever open, the backstretch beats with quiet strength. Here, the real rhythm of racing lives in the hands, voices, and footsteps of workers who rise before the sun and stay long after the track falls silent.

They are grooms, hot walkers, feeders, muckers. Men and women, many
of them Hispanic, who move with purpose and pride. Each task, whether
small or grueling, is done with care. They clean stalls, lead horses, wrap
legs, and calm nerves. They know the animals by feel, by breath, by
instinct.

This is not glamorous work. It’s honest work. And it’s vital.

These workers are the heart of the backstretch, not just because they keep it running, but because they carry it with dignity, resilience, and deep respect for the horses and for one another.

In every worn boot, every calloused hand, and every early morning, there
is pride. There is purpose. There is heart.
