Description
The 70-foot sycamore tree planted in 1936 that towers over the Paddock at Keeneland remains iconic today. The Sycamore Stakes, run in the fall on the turf course, began in 1995 to honor the stalwart tree.
Alma Headley Haggin, daughter of Hal Price Headley, one of the founders and first President of Keeneland, was responsible for much of the landscaping on the original 148 acres. Her influence is still visible today around the grounds. Keeneland maintains a tree and plant nursery to preserve this legacy.
