Description
The Blue Grass Stakes was originally run at the Kentucky Association track starting in 1911. Offered for 3-year-olds, it has always been an important race for the division as a major prep for the Kentucky Derby and was revived at Keeneland in the first Spring Meet in 1937.
11 horses have won the Derby after the Blue Grass Stakes, including Northern Dancer (1964), Spectacular Bid (1979), and Strike the Gold (1991). The 2024 running, seen in this photograph, was won by Sierra Leone, who finished second in the Derby.
