Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Charles Christian Cook Negative Collection. The collection is comprised of more than 18,000 primarily glass plate negatives from the first half of the 20th century. Subjects include Thoroughbred horses, owners, breeders, jockeys, and Thoroughbred racing and track scenes from New York, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Illinois, and Maryland; as well as series of polo and steeplechase events. Cook was one of the first photographers in the U.S. to specialize in racing and race track scenes.

Steeplechase jockey Rigan McKinney is pictured in 1938 with Gladys Crosby Whitney, the then wife of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney.
McKinney rode primarily during the Great Depression years with much success, boasting winning percentages as high as 55% (1936) and 59% (1938). McKinney claimed his first American Grand National in 1931 atop Green Cheese, setting a record that would hold nearly 25 years.

According to his New York Times obituary, Smithwick was 5 feet 11 inches tall.
Hall of Famer (inducted 1972) Paddy Smithwick was the country’s top steeplechase rider in 1956, 1957, 1958, and 1962. He considered Neji, American Steeplechase Champion in 1955, 1957, and 1958, his best mount.
