Ted Bassett served as the Chairman of the Kentucky Horse Park from 1980 to 1983, President of the Thoroughbred Racing Association from 1985 to 1986, President of the UK Equine Research Foundation from 1986 to 1989, Chairman of the Keeneland Association from 1986 to 2001, Trustee of the Keeneland Association through 2006, President of the Breeders’ Cup from 1988 to 1996, and Chairman of World Racing Championship Series from 1996 to 2004. He was awarded the Eclipse Award of Merit in 1996.
In 2019 he was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame as a Pillar of the Turf.
This piece features Bassett in the context of the 1994 Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs.

Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Charles Christian Cook Negative Collection. The collection is comprised of more than 18,000 primarily glass plate negatives from the first half of the 20th century. Subjects include Thoroughbred horses, owners, breeders, jockeys, and Thoroughbred racing and track scenes from New York, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Illinois, and Maryland; as well as series of polo and steeplechase events. Cook was one of the first photographers in the U.S. to specialize in racing and race track scenes.

This photographic portrait features jockey Benny Marinelli.
Benny Marinelli began his riding career in 1920 at East Coast tracks. He spent the 1921 winter meet season at the Agua Caliente Racetrack in Tijuana, Mexico before returning to the U.S. and finishing third in the country by wins in 1921.
Marinelli won the Preakness Stakes in 1923 aboard Vigil. He won the Travers Stakes on Wilderness and placed third in the Kentucky Derby on Vigil that same year.

Beau Purple defeated Kelso in three of their four lifetime meetings. Although Carry Back had claimed the 1961 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, Kelso was named American Horse of the Year in 1961.
Carry Back won the 1962 Monmouth Handicap with jockey John L. Rotz up, conquering Kelso, the then two-time Horse of the Year.

Boland rose to prominence after winning the 1950 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes atop Middleground at the age of 16. Other major race wins include the Jockey Club Gold Cup (1953), Whitney Handicap (1956), Massachusetts Handicap (1952, 1956), Arlington Handicap (1952), Acorn Stakes (1954), Alabama Stakes (1955), Suburban Handicap (1962), and the Wood Memorial Stakes (1966).
