Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Bernard Stanley Morgan Photographic Negative Collection. The collection (ca. 400,000 items) is comprised of black and white acetate negatives depicting Thoroughbred races at multiple race tracks in New York and Florida; as well as Triple Crown events, United Hunts races, and other Eastern steeplechase events from 1935 to 1961. Subjects include race finishes, winner’s circle ceremonies, opening day ceremonies, course views, jockeys, owners, and trainers. Several negatives are accompanied by newspaper clippings of race results.

This photograph captures Bold Ruler battling Gallant Man to the wire at the 1957 Wood Memorial Stakes. The Wheatley Stable owned champion, trained by Jim Fitzsimmons, won the race in 1:48.80.
Bold Ruler retired with a career record of 23-4-2 from 33 starts, with earnings of $764, 204. He was named U.S. Three-Year-Old Champion Male and Horse of the Year in 1957, and U.S. Champion Sprint Horse in 1958. Bold Ruler was the top North American sire eight times (1963 – 1969, 1973) and was inducted in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1973. He sired Triple Crown winner, Secretariat.
Arcaro, known as “The Master” of U.S. Thoroughbred racing, ascended to the country’s premier jockey status for much of the 20th century. He claimed a record 17 wins in Triple Crown races during his 30-year career, boasting two Triple Crown wins aboard Whirlaway (1941) and Citation (1948). He led the country in earnings in 1940, 1942, 1948, 1950, 1952, and 1958. Upon his retirement in 1961, Arcaro had run in 24,092 races, with 4,779 wins, 3,807 seconds, 3,302 thirds, and earnings that exceeded $30 million. He remains the only jockey to have ever claimed more than one Triple Crown win.
