This photograph features Thoroughbred owners William Collins Whitney (left) and August Belmont II (right).
Whitney, financier, political reformer, and Secretary of the Navy under President Cleveland, founded his Thoroughbred breeding operation at Westbury Stable, and he and a group of other investors bought and revitalized Saratoga in 1901.
Belmont founded Belmont Park, served as the first president of the Jockey Club, chaired the New York State Racing Commission, and was one of the founding members of the National Steeplechase Association.
