Alydar won the Flamingo Stakes, Florida Derby, Arlington Classic Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Whitney Handicap in 1978. This is the same year he placed second in all three Triple Crown Races—the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes.

Peb's caricature/humorist artwork depicts Triple Crown-winning racehorse Affirmed with U.S. Hall of Fame jockey Steve Cauthen, Affirmed’s trainer Laz Barrera, and Affirmed’s owner and breeder Louis Elwood Wolfson.
In this piece, Affirmed is pitted against Calumet Farm’s Alydar in the famed Triple Crown battle between the two horses. Affirmed captured the Triple Crown victory and was named American Horse of the Year in 1978 and 1979.
