Alydar won the Flamingo Stakes, Florida Derby, Arlington Classic Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Whitney Handicap in 1978. This is the same year he placed second in all three Triple Crown Races—the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes.

The collection (ca. 400,000 items) is comprised of black and white acetate negatives depicting Thoroughbred races at multiple race tracks in New York and Florida; as well as Triple Crown events, United Hunts races, and other Eastern steeplechase events from 1935 to 1961. This is a photograph of jockey Ralph P. Neves in silks walking with two other men at Pimlico in 1940.
Neves, prominent West Coast rider and American Hall of Fame jockey, won 3,772 total races and 173 stakes races over the course of his long career. When he retired in mid-1963, Neves was one of eight jockeys in the history of the sport at that time with at least 3,000 wins.

Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Charles Christian Cook Negative Collection. The collection is comprised of more than 18,000 primarily glass plate negatives from the first half of the 20th century. Subjects include Thoroughbred horses, owners, breeders, jockeys, and Thoroughbred racing and track scenes from New York, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Illinois, and Maryland; as well as series of polo and steeplechase events. Cook was one of the first photographers in the U.S. to specialize in racing and race track scenes.

Digitized page of the New York Sportsman (January 1883, page 18) featuring jockey William Barrett.
Barrett is widely remembered for his association with the legendary match race between Ten Broeck, Tom Ochiltree, and Parole in 1877. Barrett, aboard the gelding Parole, won the race by five lengths over Ten Broeck.
The U.S. Congress did not convene on the day of the match race to allow its members to attend the much anticipated event at Pimlico with an estimated 20,000 other spectators.
