1964 Champion Three-Year-Old Colt, 1964 Canadian Horse of the Year, and future influential sire and Hall of Famer Northern Dancer works on the dirt at Keeneland under Ramon Cerda. He went on to claim the Blue Grass Stakes, Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Queen’s Plate in 1964.

Tapit Trice with Luis Saez up

Tapit Trice gave jockey Luis Saez his third Blue Grass win and trainer Todd Pletcher his record-breaking fourth victory in the 2023 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes. Pletcher now maintains the most Blue Grass wins by a trainer (2005, 2008, 2015, 2023). Tapit Trice finished third in both the Belmont and Travers Stakes in 2023.

Flavien Prat celebrates aboard Zandon

Flavien Prat celebrates his 2022 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes victory aboard Zandon. The win was the colt’s second from four starts and marked Prat’s first Blue Grass victory.
Bred by Brereton Jones, Zandon was trained by Chad Brown and campaigned by Jeffrey Drown. He finished third in the Kentucky Derby four weeks after his Blue Grass victory.
As a four-year-old, Zandon boasted three consecutive second-place finishes in the Westchester Stakes and Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont before a solid run in Saratoga’s Whitney Stakes in August. He won the Woodward Stakes at Belmont in October 2023, rounding out an impressive four-year-old season.

Zandon, trained by Chad Brown and piloted by Flavien Prat, went on to claim the Triple Crown prep race by 2 1/2 lengths. The Upstart colt finished third in his next start in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs four weeks later.

Ranked second by North American earnings in 2021, Essential Quality prevailed by a neck in the 97th running of the Blue Grass Stakes. The son of Tapit went on to win the Belmont Stakes.

Strike the Gold with Chris Antley up nears the finish line to secure his single Blue Grass Stakes win in 1991. Strike the Gold finished second in the Florida Derby in March before his impressive performance in the Blue Grass, setting the colt up for his victory in the run for the roses at Churchill Downs three weeks later.

Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day celebrates aboard Summer Squall after their win in the 1990 Blue Grass Stakes.
Sporting Cot Campbell’s Dogwood Stable colors, Summer Squall went undefeated in all five of his starts as a two-year-old. By his three-year-old season in 1990, Summer Squall was a formidable racing talent best known for his rivalry with Unbridled.
Summer Squall bested Unbridled in four of their six meetings. The Neil Howard-trained colt won the 1990 Blue Grass Stakes by 1 3/4 lengths, while Unbridled trailed to come in third on a muddy track.
Summer Squall finished second behind Unbridled in the 1990 Kentucky Derby, but went on to beat his rival by 2 1/4 lengths in the Preakness Stakes two weeks later.

Keeneland. The race, inaugurated in 1911 at the Kentucky
Association racetrack near downtown Lexington, was revived at Keeneland’s inaugural Spring Meet in April 1937.
