Arcaro, known as “The Master” of U.S. Thoroughbred racing, ascended to the country’s premier jockey status for much of the mid-20th century. He claimed a record 17 wins in Triple Crown races during his 30-year career, boasting two Triple Crown wins aboard Whirlaway (1941) and Citation (1948). He led the country in earnings in 1940, 1942, 1948, 1950, 1952, and 1955. Upon his retirement in 1961, Arcaro had run in 24,092 races, with 4,779 wins and earnings that exceeded $30 million. He remains the only jockey to have ever claimed more than one Triple Crown win. &#13;
&#13;

                  <text>Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Bernard Stanley Morgan Photographic Negative Collection. The collection (ca. 400,000 items) is comprised of black and white acetate negatives depicting Thoroughbred races at multiple race tracks in New York and Florida; as well as Triple Crown events, United Hunts races, and other Eastern steeplechase events from 1935 to 1961. Subjects include race finishes, winner’s circle ceremonies, opening day ceremonies, course views, jockeys, owners, and trainers. Several negatives are accompanied by newspaper clippings of race results.</text>

Nashua, U.S. Champion Two-Year-Old Colt (1954), U.S. Champion Three-Year-Old Colt (1955), and U.S. Horse of the Year (1955), nearly claimed the Triple Crown in 1955. He won both the Preakness and Belmont Stakes but placed second in the Kentucky Derby. </text>
