Description
Northern Dancer with Racing Hall of Fame trainer Horatio Luro at Keeneland in April 1964.
Northern Dancer swept the 1964 Flamingo Stakes, Florida Derby, and Blue Grass Stakes en route to winning the Kentucky Derby. He pervailed in the Derby by a neck under Bill Hartack, setting a record time of 2:00 on a fast track. The record stood until Secretariat took the race in 1:59 2/5 in 1973.
The once unassuming Windfield Farms yearling won seven of his nine starts as a two-year-old, and he met his three-year-old prep series nearly flawlessly before being sent off as the favorite in the 1964 Blue Grass Stakes. Piloted by Bill Hartack, Norther Dancer bested Allen Adair by a half-length.
