Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Bernard Stanley Morgan Photographic Negative Collection. The collection (ca. 400,000 items) is comprised of black and white acetate negatives depicting Thoroughbred races at multiple race tracks in New York and Florida; as well as Triple Crown events, United Hunts races, and other Eastern steeplechase events from 1935 to 1961. Subjects include race finishes, winner’s circle ceremonies, opening day ceremonies, course views, jockeys, owners, and trainers. Several negatives are accompanied by newspaper clippings of race results.

Photograph of American Thoroughbred Citation with jockey Eddie Arcaro up taken after their 1948 Kentucky Derby win. They are pictured with Calumet trainer Ben Jones and his son, Horace A. 'Jimmy' Jones.
The Calumet Farm legend claimed the Triple Crown in 1948. In that same year, Citation was awarded U.S. Champion Three-Year-Old Colt, DRF Champion Male Handicap Horse, and U.S. Horse of the Year. He was inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1959.
Arcaro, known as “The Master” of U.S. Thoroughbred racing, ascended to the country’s premier jockey status for much of the mid-20th century. He claimed a record 17 wins in Triple Crown races during his 30-year career, boasting two Triple Crown wins aboard Whirlaway (1941) and Citation (1948). He led the country in earnings in 1940, 1942, 1948, 1950, 1952, and 1955. Upon his retirement in 1961, Arcaro had run in 24,092 races, with 4,779 wins and earnings that exceeded $30 million. He remains the only jockey to have ever claimed more than one Triple Crown win.

Iron Liege was bred and foaled at Calumet Farm in 1954. He retired with a 11-9-5 record from 33 starts, with earnings of $404,169. Other notable wins include the Sheridan Handicap (1957), Jersey Stakes (1957), the Laurance Armour Memorial Handicap (1957), and the McLennan Handicap (1958).

Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Joel Clyne Meadors Photographic Negative Collection. The collection, comprised of more than 5,000 acetate negatives, includes photographs of Thoroughbred horses, horse farms, racetrack scenes, horse sales, and people active in the Thoroughbred industry; as well as a group of negatives on business and commercial subjects in Lexington, Kentucky.
Joel Clyne “Skeets” Meadors maintained a full-time career as a photographer, specializing in conformation images of stallions, mares, and yearlings from 1947 to 1967.

This conformation photograph, taken at Calumet Farm in 1957, features the American Thoroughbred Bardstown.
Bardstown, bred at Calumet and trained by Horace A. Jones, began his four-year racing career at the age of four due to early hip and ankle issues. He set a track record at Tropical Park with his 1959 Orange Bowl Handicap win, and he retired in 1960 with a successful older horse racing career record of 18-7-1 from 31 starts and earnings of $628,752.
