Sir Gallahad III was foaled in France in 1920 (registered in France as Sir Gallahad) and was retired to stud duty in France after three years of successful racing. He was sold to a U.S. syndicate comprised of Marshall Field III, Arthur B. Hancock, William Woodward, Sr., and Robert A. Fairburn in 1926. Upon his U.S. registration, the Thoroughbred was recorded as Sir Gallahad III. Sir Gallahad III stood at both Hancock’s Claiborne Farm and Woodward’s Belair Stud, among other farms, and became one of the most prominent sires of the first half of the 20th century. He is buried at Claiborne Farm. He was leading North American sire in 1930, 1933, 1934, and 1940, and leading North American broodmare sire a record-breaking 12 times (1939, 1943-1952, and 1955). Some of the 65 stakes winners sired by Sir Gallahad III include Gallant Fox, Gallahadion, Hoop Jr., High Quest, Roman, and Fenelon.
