Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Bernard Stanley Morgan Photographic Negative Collection. The collection (ca. 400,000 items) is comprised of black and white acetate negatives depicting Thoroughbred races at multiple race tracks in New York and Florida; as well as Triple Crown events, United Hunts races, and other Eastern steeplechase events from 1935 to 1961. Subjects include race finishes, winner’s circle ceremonies, opening day ceremonies, course views, jockeys, owners, and trainers. Several negatives are accompanied by newspaper clippings of race results.

Photograph of the American Thoroughbred Seabiscuit with jockey John M. ‘Red’ Pollard up. Seabiscuit is held by his trainer, Tom Smith, following his Yonkers Handicap win at the Empire City Race Track in July of 1937.
Seabiscuit, sired by Hard Tack out of Swing On, was foaled in 1933. His career began slowly, but he began to dominate the racing world during his four-year-old year – setting multiple records and claiming several stakes wins.
Seabiscuit was named U.S. Champion Handicap Male in 1937 and 1938 and U.S. Horse of the Year in 1938. He was inducted in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1958.
