Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Joel Clyne Meadors Photographic Negative Collection. The collection, comprised of more than 5,000 acetate negatives, includes photographs of Thoroughbred horses, horse farms, racetrack scenes, horse sales, and people active in the Thoroughbred industry; as well as a group of negatives on business and commercial subjects in Lexington, Kentucky.
Joel Clyne “Skeets” Meadors maintained a full-time career as a photographer, specializing in conformation images of stallions, mares, and yearlings from 1947 to 1967.

This photograph captures Candy Spot’s arrival to Gainesway Farm in August of 1965.
Candy Spots (by Argentinian-bred Nigromante out of Candy Dish) was a multiple graded stakes-winning Thoroughbred foaled in California in 1960.
Candy Spots won the Arlington-Washington Futurity Stakes and Futurity Trial in his two-year-old season and was undefeated going into the Kentucky Derby the following year, claiming the 1963 Arlington Classic and the Jersey, Florida, Santa Anita, and American Derbies. He won the 1963 Preakness Stakes (Bill Shoemaker up).
He was unraced as a four-year-old and won the San Pasqual Handicap in his five-year-old season before being retired to stud in 1965 with a record of 12-5-1 from 22 starts and earnings of $824,718. His stud career was unremarkable.
