Broomstick was foaled at McGrathiana Stud Farm in 1901. Sired by Ben Brush out of Elf, Broomstick had three successful racing seasons (1903 to 1905) before being retired to a stud career during which he topped the North American sire list for three consecutive years (1913 to 1915).
Notable progeny include Whisk Broom II and Regret, who in 1915, became the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby.
