Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Charles Christian Cook Negative Collection. The collection is comprised of more than 18,000 primarily glass plate negatives from the first half of the 20th century. Subjects include Thoroughbred horses, owners, breeders, jockeys, and Thoroughbred racing and track scenes from New York, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Illinois, and Maryland; as well as series of polo and steeplechase events. Cook was one of the first photographers in the U.S. to specialize in racing and race track scenes.

The Arlington Million was the first U.S. Thoroughbred race to offer a purse of $1 million.
Arlington Park closed in 1998 and was purchased by Churchill Downs Incorporated in 2000. Depicted in this parody of the Broadway musical Chicago are Churchill Downs CEO Thomas H. Meeker and Richard Duchossois, prior owner of Arlington Park.
Racehorses Manndar, Mula Gula, Asidero, Bienamado, Running Stag, Slickly, and Chester House are also featured.
Juddmonte Farm's Chester House, ridden by Jerry Bailey and trained by Robert J. Frankel, won the renewal of the Arlington Million in 2000.

Peb's caricature/humorist artwork depicts U.S. Racing Hall of Fame trainer John M. Veitch, head trainer for Calumet Farm from 1976 until 1982, with jockey Jeffrey Fell and U.S. Racing Hall of Fame racehorse Alydar in the “Calumet” balloon en route to the Arlington Classic in 1978.
Alydar won the Flamingo Stakes, Florida Derby, Arlington Classic Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Whitney Handicap in 1978. This is the same year he placed second in all three Triple Crown Races—the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes.
