This photographic portrait features jockey James "Jimmy" Winkfield.
Winkfield, a native of Chilesburg, Kentucky, won back-to-back Kentucky Derbies in 1901 aboard His Eminence and in 1902 aboard Alan-a-Dale. He was the last African-American to win the Kentucky Derby.
In 1901, Winkfield’s best year in the U.S., he won a documented 220 races. Winkfield began riding internationally in 1904, collecting over 2,500 wins in 30 years.
He was inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 2004.
