This photograph shows jockey Oliver Eric Guerin up on Native Dancer in the saddling paddock at the 1953 Dwyer Stakes at Aqueduct.
He won the 1947 Kentucky Derby aboard Jet Pilot for Elizabeth Arden of Maine Chance Farm.
Guerin rode Native Dancer through his undefeated 1952. In 1953 Guerin and Native Dancer won both the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. Native Dancer earned the 3 Year Old Champion title in 1953 and Horse of the Year honors in 1954.

Boland rose to prominence after winning the 1950 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes atop Middleground at the age of 16. Other major race wins include the Jockey Club Gold Cup (1953), Whitney Handicap (1956), Massachusetts Handicap (1952, 1956), Arlington Handicap (1952), Acorn Stakes (1954), Alabama Stakes (1955), Suburban Handicap (1962), and the Wood Memorial Stakes (1966). Boland finished his 20-year career with 2,049 wins and purse earnings exceeding $14.5 million.

Atkinson began riding professionally at the age of 21. He rode War Relic in an upset victory over the 1941 Triple Crown Winner Whirlaway in the Narragansett Special. That ride gained him national recognition that continued over his 21-year career.
He was America’s leading jockey by wins and money earned in 1944 and 1946.
Atkinson won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes riding Greentree’s Capot in 1949. In 1953, he rode Tom Fool, Horse of the Year, for ten consecutive wins.
Atkinson received the George Woolf Memorial Award in 1957. He was inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame the same year.

This is a photographic portrait of jockey Ismael "Milo" Valenzuela.
He rose to prominence aboard Tim Tam in a near Triple Crown victory in 1958. Valenzuela and Tim Tam swept the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes but finished second in the Belmont Stakes after Tim Tam fractured a sesamoid bone near the finish line.
Valenzuela almost swept the Triple Crown again ten years later aboard Forward Pass. Although they claimed the 1968 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, the pair finished second in the Belmont Stakes.
Other notable mounts include Kelso.
Over his nearly 30-year career, Valenzuela won 2,545 races with purse earnings exceeding $20 million. He was inducted in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.

This is a photographic portrait of jockey John "Gentleman John" L. Rotz.
Rotz, widely known as “Gentleman John” as a nod to his professionalism, received the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 1973. Rotz was the North American stakes race leader in 1969 and 1970. He claimed wins in both the Preakness (aboard Greek Money, 1962) and Belmont Stakes (aboard High Echelon, 1970). Rotz won 2,907 races over his 20-year career and was inducted in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1983.

According to his New York Times obituary, Smithwick was 5 feet 11 inches tall.
Hall of Famer (inducted 1972) Paddy Smithwick was the country’s top steeplechase rider in 1956, 1957, 1958, and 1962. He considered Neji, American Steeplechase Champion in 1955, 1957, and 1958, his best mount.

This photograph features jockey William Lee "The Shoe" Shoemaker on the scales after riding his 300th win at Aqueduct in 1959.
Bill Shoemaker rode for 40 years, winning roughly 21.9% of 40,350 races before his retirement in 1990. He was America’s leading jockey ten times in money won and five times in races won.
He won the Kentucky Derby four times, aboard Swaps in 1955, Tomy Lee in 1959, Lucky Debonair in 1965, and Ferdinand in 1986 at the age of 54.
His 11 trips to Triple Crown winner’s circles also include his two Preakness Stakes wins (1963, 1967) and five Belmont Stakes wins (1957, 1959, 1962, 1967, 1975).
Shoemaker was inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1958. He won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey in 1981.
