Description
One of the goals for Keeneland’s founders was to establish races for fillies and mares in order to test the endurance and speed of breeding stock. The Spinster Stakes was proposed by Hal Price Headley and inaugurated at the 1956 Fall Meet as the first weight-for-age distaff (for females) stakes race. It was won by Doubledogdare, bred by Claiborne Farm.
