Description

Photograph of the American Thoroughbred Sir Barton with jockey Earl Sande up.

As a three-year-old in 1919, Sir Barton won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes (by five lengths, setting a new American record). He was inducted in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1957.

Sir Barton is often remembered in association with Man o' War, although the two met only once on the track. On October 12, 1920, Sir Barton lost the seminal match race against Man o' War at Kenilworth Park in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Earl Sande, inducted in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1955, was one of the country’s most popular jockeys in the 1920s and 1930s. His many stakes wins included three Kentucky Derby (1923, 1925, 1930), five Belmont Stakes (1921, 1923, 1924, 1927, 1930), and four Jockey Club Gold Cup (1921, 1922, 1927, 1930) victories. He won the Triple Crown in 1930 atop Gallant Fox.
