Ten Broeck was bred by John Harper and foaled near Midway, Kentucky, in June of 1872. Ten Broeck set records at distances ranging from one to four miles. He defeated Arisitides in the 1875 Phoenix Hotel Stakes as a three-year-old, but later lost to him in the inaugural running of the Kentucky Derby His match race victory against West Coast Mollie McCarty in 1878 is commemorated in the Kentucky folk song “Molly and Tenbrooks.” Ten Broeck was inducted in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1982.
