Title A name given to the resource Kauai King Subject The topic of the resource Photography of horse sports Description An account of the resource Photograph of the American Thoroughbred Kauai King with groom taken at Churchill Downs before the Kentucky Derby on May 8, 1966. Kauai King (by Native Dancer out of Sweep In) was foaled at Sagamore Farm in Maryland in 1963. He rose to prominence during his three-year-old season, winning both the 1966 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, with Don Brumfield up for both victories. His racing career was ended on June 27, 1966, when he sustained a ligament injury during the Arlington Classic. After a career record of 9-2-1 from 16 starts and earnings of $381,397, Kauai King was initially retired to stand at stud at Sagamore Farm before being shipped to stud duty in England between 1971 and 1973. He was then sent to a breeding farm in Japan where he remained until his death in 1989.
