Barrett is widely remembered for his association with the legendary match race between Ten Broeck, Tom Ochiltree, and Parole in 1877. Barrett, aboard the gelding Parole, won the race by five lengths over Ten Broeck.
The U.S. Congress did not convene on the day of the match race to allow its members to attend the much anticipated event at Pimlico with an estimated 20,000 other spectators.
