Barbee moved from England to the U.S. in 1872 to ride for John Chamberlain at Monmouth Park. He won the inaugural Preakness Stakes aboard Survivor in 1873 and claimed two additional Preakness wins aboard Shirley (1876) and Jacobus (1883).
Barbee also took the 1874 Belmont Stakes aboard Saxon. He won the Travers Stakes In both 1874 (Attila) and 1875 (D'Artagnan).
