Mortensen had just turned 16 when he was named leading U.S. jockey by wins in 1925.

With 187 wins that year from 987 mounts, he finished in the money 470 times with earnings of just over $185,000.

Born in Kilgore, Idaho in 1909, Mortensen was one of several prominent jockeys of the era with Idaho roots, including Earl Sande, Ivan Parke, and the Fator brothers Lavern, Mark, and Elmer.
