The collection is comprised of more than 18,000 primarily glass plate negatives from the first half of the 20th century. Subjects include Thoroughbred horses, owners, breeders, jockeys, and Thoroughbred racing and track scenes from New York, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Illinois, and Maryland; as well as series of polo and steeplechase events. Cook was one of the first photographers in the U.S. to specialize in racing and race track scenes.

This is a photograph of John Edward Madden, inductee of both the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame and the Harness Racing Hall of Fame.
Madden was a prominent Thoroughbred and Standardbred owner, breeder, and trainer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He ran his breeding operations from Hamburg Place Stud in Lexington, Kentucky, from 1897 until his death in 1929.
His champions included Sir Barton, Old Rosebud, Paul Jones, The Finn, Zev, Flying Ebony, Grey Lag, and Plaudit.

The collection is comprised of more than 18,000 primarily glass plate negatives from the first half of the 20th century. Subjects include Thoroughbred horses, owners, breeders, jockeys, and Thoroughbred racing and track scenes from New York, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Illinois, and Maryland; as well as series of polo and steeplechase events. Cook was one of the first photographers in the U.S. to specialize in racing and race track scenes.

Harry Payne Whitney, American businessman, avid sportsman, and prominent Thoroughbred owner, was the leading U.S. owner eight times in the early 20th century. The nearly 200 stakes winners from Whitney Stables include Regret, Whiskery, Buskin, Broomspun, Bostonian, Victorian, and Burgomaster.
James R. Keene’s family emigrated to the United States from England in 1852. Having made his first fortune in West Coast mining companies, Keene was president of the San Francisco Stock Exchange before moving to New York and emerging as a major player in the New York financial and racing scenes. Keene’s Castleton Farm near Lexington, Kentucky, was a leading American breeding operation of the early 20th century.
