Description
An account of the resource
This photograph features jockeys (left to right) R. McDaniel, Mack Garner, and Eddie Dugan in 1908.
Mack Garner began his racing career at the age of 14. By 1915, he was the country’s top jockey in both purses earned and races won. He was the top earner again in 1929. Garner’s notable victories include two Belmont Stakes (1929, 1933), two Jerome Handicaps (1930, 1933), the Kentucky Derby (1934), the American Derby (1934), and the Travers Stakes (1915). Garner was inducted in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1969.
Eddie Dugan, top U.S. jockey by earnings in 1909, was suspended multiple times in his early years of racing for rough riding. The suspensions, coupled with anti-gambling legislation, impeded Dugan’s continued success. After competing in Canada in 1911 and in Russia in 1913 and 1914, Dugan returned to the United States with limited success. His notable early victories include the Manhattan Handicap (1907), the Suburban Handicap (1909), the Jerome Stakes (1909), the Tremont Stakes (1910), the Preakness Stakes (1908, 1911), and the Belmont Stakes (1909).
