Arcaro, known as the “Master” of U.S. racing, ascended to the country’s premier jockey status for much of the mid-20th century.
He claimed a record 17 wins in Triple Crown races during his 30-year career, boasting two Triple Crown wins aboard Whirlaway (1941) and Citation (1948).
Arcaro led the country in earnings in 1940, 1942, 1948, 1950, 1952, and 1955. Upon his retirement in 1961, he had 24,092 mounts, with 4,779 wins and earnings that exceeded $30 million.
Arcaro remains the only jockey to have won more than one Triple Crown.

This photograph captures Bold Ruler battling Gallant Man to the wire at the 1957 Wood Memorial Stakes. The Wheatley Stable owned champion, trained by Jim Fitzsimmons, won the race in 1:48.80.
Bold Ruler retired with a career record of 23-4-2 from 33 starts, with earnings of $764, 204. He was named U.S. Three-Year-Old Champion Male and Horse of the Year in 1957, and U.S. Champion Sprint Horse in 1958. Bold Ruler was the top North American sire eight times (1963 – 1969, 1973) and was inducted in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1973. He sired Triple Crown winner, Secretariat.

This conformation shot of the American Thoroughbred and Hall of Famer Whirlaway was taken at Saratoga during his two-year-old season (1940).
Whirlaway, bred and foaled at Calumet Farm in 1938, was trained by Ben Jones. He was a multiple graded stakes-winning champion that claimed the 1941 Triple Crown victory with Eddie Arcaro up. Whirlaway was the first horse with career winnings that exceeded $500,000, and he boasted a record of 32-15-9 from 60 starts.
Whirlaway won the titles of U.S. Champion Two-Year-Old Colt (1940), U.S. Champion Three-Year-Old Colt (1941), and the 1941 and 1942 Eclipse Awards for Horse of the Year. He was inducted in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1959.

Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Joel Clyne Meadors Photographic Negative Collection. The collection, comprised of more than 5,000 acetate negatives, includes photographs of Thoroughbred horses, horse farms, racetrack scenes, horse sales, and people active in the Thoroughbred industry; as well as a group of negatives on business and commercial subjects in Lexington, Kentucky.
Joel Clyne “Skeets” Meadors maintained a full-time career as a photographer, specializing in conformation images of stallions, mares, and yearlings from 1947 to 1967.

This conformation photograph of the American Thoroughbred and multiple graded stakes winner Shut Out was taken at Greentree Stable in August of 1956.
Shut Out was bred by Greentree Stable in Lexington, Kentucky, foaled in 1939, and trained by John Gaver, Sr. He won both the 1942 Kentucky Derby (Wayne D. Wright up) and the Belmont Stakes (Eddie Arcaro up), but lost the possibility of a Triple Crown title when Alsab claimed the Preakness that year. He retired with a career record of 16-6-4 from 40 starts and earnings of $317,507.

Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Charles Christian Cook Negative Collection. The collection is comprised of more than 18,000 primarily glass plate negatives from the first half of the 20th century. Subjects include Thoroughbred horses, owners, breeders, jockeys, and Thoroughbred racing and track scenes from New York, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, Illinois, and Maryland; as well as series of polo and steeplechase events. Cook was one of the first photographers in the U.S. to specialize in racing and race track scenes.
