Indy colt dominated the seven-horse Blue Grass field before finishing fourth in the Kentucky Derby in his next start three weeks later. Following up his 1996 win aboard Skip Away, this gave Shane Sellers back-to-back Blue Grass victories.

Conformation photograph of the Thoroughbred Sir Gallahad III taken at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky.
Sir Gallahad III was foaled in France in 1920 (registered in France as Sir Gallahad) and was retired to stud duty in France after three years of successful racing.
He was sold to a U.S. syndicate comprised of Marshall Field III, Arthur B. Hancock, William Woodward, Sr., and Robert A. Fairburn in 1926. Upon his U.S. registration, the Thoroughbred was recorded as Sir Gallahad III.
Sir Gallahad III stood at both Hancock’s Claiborne Farm and Woodward’s Belair Stud, among other farms, and became one of the most prominent sires of the first half of the 20th century. He is buried at Claiborne Farm.
He was leading North American sire in 1930, 1933, 1934, and 1940, and leading North American broodmare sire a record-breaking 12 times (1939, 1943-1952, and 1955). Some of the 65 stakes winners sired by Sir Gallahad III include Gallant Fox, Gallahadion, Hoop Jr., High Quest, Roman, and Fenelon.

This conformation photograph, taken in May of 1964, is of the American stakes-winning Thoroughbred Never Bend.
Never Bend was foaled in 1960 at Paris, Kentucky’s Claiborne Farm. He was a major contender in American racing during his two-year-old season, claiming several stakes victories and the Outstanding Two-Year-Old Male Horse Eclipse Award in 1962. Although regarded as a likely favorite for the 1963 Triple Crown, Never Bend came in second in the Kentucky Derby, third in the Preakness Stakes, and did not run in the Belmont Stakes that year.
He retired to a successful stud career after his 1963 racing season, with a career record of 13-4-4 from 23 starts and earnings of $641,524. Never Bend sired 61 stakes winners, was the broodmare sire of 115 stakes winners, and earned the title of Leading Sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1971.

This photograph features Bold Ruler with an unknown handler.
Bold Ruler, sire of Secretariat, was the country's Three-Year-Old Champion Male and American Horse of the Year in 1957. He was named U.S. Champion Sprint Horse in 1958 and went on to hold the title of leading sire in North America for seven consecutive years (1963-1969) and again in 1973. He was bred by Gladys Mills Phipps and foaled on April 6, 1954 at Claiborne Farm. He would later retire to stud at Claiborne.

Items in this collection were digitized from the Keeneland Library’s Joel Clyne Meadors Photographic Negative Collection. The collection, comprised of more than 5,000 acetate negatives, includes photographs of Thoroughbred horses, horse farms, racetrack scenes, horse sales, and people active in the Thoroughbred industry; as well as a group of negatives on business and commercial subjects in Lexington, Kentucky.
Joel Clyne “Skeets” Meadors maintained a full-time career as a photographer, specializing in conformation images of stallions, mares, and yearlings from 1947 to 1967.

Princequillo, born in Ireland, was shipped to the U.S. for safety during WWII. Trained by Horatio Luro, Princequillo is remembered for his long-distance success and prominent stud career. He held the ranks of leading sire in North America in 1957 and 1958, He is buried at Claiborne Farm.
