Citation at Churchill Downs
Photograph of horse sports
Photograph of American Thoroughbred Citation with jockey Eddie Arcaro up taken after their 1948 Kentucky Derby win. They are pictured with Calumet trainer Ben Jones and his son, Horace A. 'Jimmy' Jones.
The Calumet Farm legend claimed the Triple Crown in 1948. In that same year, Citation was awarded U.S. Champion Three-Year-Old Colt, DRF Champion Male Handicap Horse, and U.S. Horse of the Year. He was inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 1959.
Arcaro, known as “The Master” of U.S. Thoroughbred racing, ascended to the country’s premier jockey status for much of the mid-20th century. He claimed a record 17 wins in Triple Crown races during his 30-year career, boasting two Triple Crown wins aboard Whirlaway (1941) and Citation (1948). He led the country in earnings in 1940, 1942, 1948, 1950, 1952, and 1955. Upon his retirement in 1961, Arcaro had run in 24,092 races, with 4,779 wins and earnings that exceeded $30 million. He remains the only jockey to have ever claimed more than one Triple Crown win.

Ponder
Photography of horse sports
Conformation shot of the American Thoroughbred Ponder with groom. Ponder, his sire (Pensive), and his son (Needles) were all Kentucky Derby winners.
Ponder was foaled at Calumet Farm in 1946 and trained by Hall of Famer Ben Jones. He ran with his year older stable mates Coaltown and Citation, although he was a year younger than both.
Ponder had an unremarkable two-year-old record, but he rose to prominence with his Lawrence Realization Stakes, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Arlington Classic, and American Derby victories in 1949. He won the 1949 Kentucky Derby and came in second in the Belmont Stakes.
Ponder bested Citation in the San Antonio Handicap in 1950, and he retired with a career record of 14-7-4 from 41 starts, with earnings of $541,275.

Citation’s Nemesis
Horse racing in art
Artwork featured in John McEvoy’s Through the Pages of the Daily Racing Form published by the DRF Press and illustrated by Peb in 1995 to commemorate the publication’s first 100 years (1894 to 1994).
Calumet Farm’s Citation claimed the Triple Crown in 1948, the same year he earned the titles of American Champion Three-Year-Old Horse and American Horse of the Year.
The feature originally accompanied a DRF article highlighting the rivalry between Citation and Noor published on December 4, 1950. Noor beat Citation in four of their five encounters that year.
