Description

This photograph captures Candy Spot’s arrival to Gainesway Farm in August of 1965.

Candy Spots (by Argentinian-bred Nigromante out of Candy Dish) was a multiple graded stakes-winning Thoroughbred foaled in California in 1960.

Candy Spots won the Arlington-Washington Futurity Stakes and Futurity Trial in his two-year-old season and was undefeated going into the Kentucky Derby the following year, claiming the 1963 Arlington Classic and the Jersey, Florida, Santa Anita, and American Derbies. He won the 1963 Preakness Stakes (Bill Shoemaker up).

He was unraced as a four-year-old and won the San Pasqual Handicap in his five-year-old season before being retired to stud in 1965 with a record of 12-5-1 from 22 starts and earnings of $824,718. His stud career was unremarkable.
